At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed with initials. Date from docket. Wolcott attests to a statement he made in a letter to Jacob Bogardus: "The aspersion mentioned in Mr. Bogardus letter was that I wrote to him that the conduct of [Mr. Shneill] in selling his negro I considered a wanton act of Barbarity. OW." Written on a blank leaf, with address leaf on verso, to Andrew Adams, docketed "Genl. Wolcott's letter inclosing a letter from Jacob Bogardus & Dep. Oct. 1779."
