Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"No 4." Written from camp near Franklin. Discusses his business selling newspapers and his wish to be free from debt. If he is unable to go east this year, he will be entitled to two tickets next year. When he gets home he wants to do something about Eddy's feet.
