At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bust portrait of a young sailor whose cheeks have been tinted pink. Tag inside identifies the image as "Charles Gordon Yeaton, my father." CASE: Stamped paper on wood with floral design center between two rows of "IIIIIIIII." Gold edging on both the exterior and interior of the case. Case thickness 1.6 cm.
