Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Half length, seated view of young man with goatee. Military buttons and emblems have been painted gold. The "US" on his belt buckle is backwards. Descriptive tag: "Alonzo V. Walker Co. E. 15th Regt. Mass. Volunteers." CASE: Stamped paper on wood featuring geometric designs. Case thickness 1.9 cm.
