Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Morton wears the shoulder insignia of an ensign, but the sleeve stripes of a staff master. Ink inscription on recto "G. W. Morton--U.S. Navy." Ink inscription on verso "GW Morton U.S. Navy." Photographers imprint on verso: "I. W. Cook, Photographer, Wemouth Landing, Ms. Photographs Additional Copies from the plate from which this picture is taken, can be had if desired." Cancelled blue two-cent tax stamp on verso.
