Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Subject appears to be very young. He is wearing a sword, his forage hat is resting on a table. Photographers imprint on verso: "J. G. Vail Photographer, 6 Seneca Str. Geneva, N.Y. Additional copies from the plate from which this picture is taken can be had if desired."
