At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Identification based on inscription. Logan has an uncharacteristic full beard and mustache. No image of him as a brigadier general was available for comparison. Ink inscription on recto "Logan." Graphite inscription on verso "Maj Genl John A Logan Mem con from Ill." Photographers imprint on verso: "From Porter's Gallery, 106 Fourth St. Cincinnati. Photographs of all sizes in India Ink, Oil and Water colors. Daguerreotype and other Pictures Copied to any size."
