At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image of the final resting place of a rebel soldier, with his hands raised as if to ward off danger. With the remnants of his personal effects at his side, the pose seems to have been contrived by the photographer. Graphite inscription on verso: "Rebel soldier trenches Fort Mahone Petersburg April 2 /65."
