The image shows a steamboat on the river. In the foreground is a group of sailors in a small boat flying a US flag, and 5 more sailors on a dock . Inscription on verso: "U.S. steamer 'Massas'ot', in James river, 1864" and "Collection of Americana Frederick H. Meserve 285 Edgecombe Avenue New York City." Numeric notation on verso: "240."
