At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a bombed building on the far bank of the river with a man standing amidst the rubble on the near bank, a fence leading into the water on the far right, and more buildings in the distance. Inscription on verso: "Appomattox River above the City" and "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso: "XI-IV" and "1092."
