At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Same as #1002. The image shows a busy blacksmith's shop, with what appears to be an African-American smith seated in the center of the photo surrounded by equipment, horses and soldiers. Numeric notation on image: "110." Inscription on verso: "Army blacksmith and forge, Antietam, Sept., 1862." Numeric notations on verso: "110" and "34."
