The photo shows a Confederate soldier killed by a shell in the trenches at Fort Mahone. The photo was taken the day after the storming of Petersburg, VA. Inscription on verso: "A dead Confederate soldier" and "Collection of Americana Frederick A Meserve 265 Edgecombe Avenue New York City." Numeric notations on verso: "6" and "269."
