At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Roughly constructed wooden buildings which were used as the winter quarters of the Confederate Army. Inscription on verso: "Winter quarters of the Rebel army at Manassas, Va., 1862." Numeric notation on verso: "121." Additional inscription on verso: "Collection of Americana. Frederick H. Meserve 265 Edgecombe Avenue New York City."
