At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A small section on the field of battle at Cold Harbor, where the remains of a soldier's uniform remains. Atop the uniform remnants, a human skull has been placed (as it seems too artfully placed to have fallen coincidentally in such a manner). Inscription on verso: "Battlefield-Cold Harbor." Numeric notation on verso: "95."
