Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Benton is wearing epaulets and holds his sword in front of him with both hands. His hat rests on a table to the left and has the infantry horn insignia on it. The upper corners of the the image have been rounded to create an arch at the top. Inscription on verso: "Brig. Gen. Benton." From Brady Archives, mounted on cabinet card mounts just before or during early 1862.
