At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cook replies to Meserve's letter about two similar Lincoln prints on behalf of the Lincoln National Life Foundation. Cook believes that both of the prints were "made from negatives made from other prints" and asks Meserve if he has any information on the style of camera Brady used for studio portraits.
