Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The earthworks in this image are most likely the same as in # 607 and #615. In this view, it is possible to see the curve of the earthworks and the man in civilian clothes leaning against them [center, middleground]. The number "1070" appears in the lower left corner. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's (keeper of Lincoln's tomb) scrapbook.
