Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Foster is seated facing the camera with his legs crossed. He is wearing gloves and holds his sword with his left hand. His right arm and hat rest on the table beside him which is covered with a tableloth. Behind him on the left of the image is a decorative curtain. Inscription on recto and verso: "Col Foster."
