Thirty five men are posed in two lines, with one line standing and another kneeling in front. Ten others are visible in the background. The kneeling soldiers hold rifles and the insignia on their hats appears to indicate that they are either artillerymen or cavalrymen. They are posed under a makeshift canopy of tree boughs and leaves. The two officers stand just in front of the lines on the left side of the image. Two flags and a row of tents are visible behind the group and there are several tree stumps in the foreground. The man on the far left has a drum.
