Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The outer walls of the fort extend across the image, bordered at its base by the outer wooden stockade. There is a lone man in the center of the image and a cannon is barely visible between the center mounds of sand of the fortification in the background. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notation on verso: "480." Nearly identical photo can be seen in .0545.
