The image shows the earthen bomproof rampart [the "pulpit"] at Fort Fisher with the ocean in the background. Two chimneys constucted out of bricks can be seen along with seven soldiers lounging in and around the shelters. Two men lean on posts by the chimney, two sit on the ground, two more sit on the opposite side and the seventh is visible in the upper right of the image. A row of rifles [stacked arms] runs down the center of the trench. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notation on verso: "XXII" and "535."
