At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Long purple ink inscription of W. H. Chamberlain pasted on verso. Chamberlain claims to have spoken to Capt. J. Frank Richardson, who identified this ship as the "General Bragg." However, the inscription has been crossed out and the name "The General Bragg" has been struck on the recto." Graphite inscription on recto "(For the book)." Stamp of Century Company and graphite inscription "VI 83" on verso. The Naval Historic Society identifies this image as beign that of the "General Bragg." She served the Confederacy as the "cottonclad" ram CSS General Bragg in 1862 and was captured off Memphis, Tennessee, on 6 May of that year. The "General Bragg" was then galvanized and put into the service of the Union.
