Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Four images numbering 8494 - 8497. The images were taken from the cupola of the University of Tennessee. The images have been reduced by the photographer in different scales. Collateral note says "The right on No. 1 should join the left of No. 2, but to make them fit as they do in the original the scale of no. 1 should be increased about 1/3, or that of No. 2 should be reduced 1/4. " The images include reference to landmarks beneath the image.
