At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Taken by Gutekunst. Accompanying text panel reads: "Scenes from the battlefield at Gettysburg, PA. Second Corps Hospital. Christian Commission tents in the foreground. This hospital contains 2,500 wounded." Dr. Justin Dwinell, 106th Penn. Infantry, who was in charge of the 2nd Corps hospital at Gettysburg, can be seen standing to the imediate left of the tree directly in front of the large tent in the right foreground. The civilian man wearing an unusually patterned, light colored frock coat standing on Dwinell's left, can also be seen in GLC 511.01.0229. A group of medical sewards, civilian nurses and members from one of the civilian relief organizations are standing around the tents. The hospital was located on the [Jacob] Schwartz farm between July 5-23 1863. A row of corn stalks can be seen in the immediate foreground.
