Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph showing three buildings on a street. The one on the right hand side has a sign, "Dinning and Sleeping rooms," and was a probably a hotel used by soldiers on furlough. The next building is a very large, two story wooden building with two visible open skylights. The third building, on the left hand side of the photograph is a three story brick building with no identification. A large flag pole is in front of the building with the skylights. Wooden sidewalk with large number of civilians and a small group of soldiers [in front of hotel]. Note the snow and slush on the road. "XXIX" "901."
