At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a group of Union troops. An officer on the far right inspects, two regular soldiers, two Zouave soldiers, and four cavalrymen, while a group of other soldiers stands and watches in the background. The Zouaves wear dark blue jackets and less baggy trousers, with red sashes, white leggings [gaiters], and jambiéres. The cavalry men belong to Co. K of the 1st Indiana Cav., Co.s C & D of the 1st Mass. Cav., and the 3rd Penn. Cav. The photograph appears in the Photographic History of the Civil War, Vol. II, Part 2, p. 182. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XI-II 251."
