At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Accepts his defeat in the presidential election of 1864 as the will of the people, but still believes that the country will eventually adopt his policies. Remarks, "I accept the result as a proof that the public mind was not yet prepared to adopt the policy we advocated, & which I believe is yet destined to run the Republic ... " Thanks Ward for all his efforts.
