Accepts his defeat in the presidential election of 1864 as the will of the people, but still believes that the country will eventually adopt his policies. Remarks, "I accept the result as a proof that the public mind was not yet prepared to adopt the policy we advocated, & which I believe is yet destined to run the Republic ...
