At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Petition of the captains and subalterns of the 62nd Regiment of Foot, protesting the Articles of Convention to General John Burgoyne. Dated from other petitions in this collection which have a date of 10 November 1777. Says they cannot give their parole because of curfew restrictions and subpar housing. Claims "They feel themselves injured, that their Words of Honor are only to be trusted in Day light." Also claim their circumstances are "bordering upon close confinement." No signatures are appended.
