At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in Skenesborough or Skenesboro, which is now Whitehall, New York. Receipt for Francis Hogel, who had to sign it with an "x" as his mark. Says Hogel received 10 guineas for his service in the King's Army from Major Robert Kingston, a member of the staff of General John Burgoyne.
