At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from three miles to the left of their previous position (possibly near the Weldon Railroad in Virginia). Writes of the captured rebel prisoners and four cannons. Expresses confidence in the success of the Union army but admits there are obstacles to victory, including Copperheads and traitors in the North.
