At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife that he is working hard for his mining company. Reports that the weather is cold and that the nearest post office is forty miles away. Describes the food and says that the men in the company take turns cooking and baking. The salutation reads "Mrs. R.A. Conger," for Ruth Ann.
