At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Updates his wife on family members and expresses happiness that his son is better and recovering. Says that Humphreys wants the government to go into the cloth-manufacturing business "now that Wilmington is closed & we will have to look more closely to home for our supplies." Notes that the Navy "is confined to such a narrow compass now that it is hard to find work for the officers."
