Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Maury tried to get leave to go home to comfort his wife and help take care of their son, who has diphtheria, but was appointed to a court martial. When the trial is over he will try to come home. Writes, "the returned prisoners are coming in pretty fast, those from Pt. Lookout are the first to arrive...." Year inferred.
