At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Stonewall" Jackson writes to Colonel Bennett to accept his offer to make him a brigadier General in the Confederate Army and put him in command of all troops in western Virginia. States, "The sooner it is done the better. Have me ordered at once: that Country is now bleeding at every pore." Docketed by Bennett.
