At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Series: "Spirit of the Campaign Number Two" Heading on the first page reads: "The Candidates and the Doctrines of the Two Parties." Pro-republican campaign material attacks Seymour and the Democrats as anti-union during the war, and anti-Reconstruction now. Also attacks the Democrats for seeking direct taxation of property. The Republicans promise to reduce debt and maintain public credit.
