At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written while he was under indictment for treason and hiding in England. Reviews the history of Pennsylvania's government since his departure in 1684, lamenting about his failure to find fit administrators and the division between the upper and lower counties (i.e., Pennsylvania and Delaware). Refers to the proclamation ordering him held for treason. Signed "W."
