At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He has just finished the session and expects to be on his way home soon. He reports news from Parks about North Carolina women. He is anxious to be home with Nancy McCalle. He is often asked about his religion, to which he responds that he was raised Presbyterian, because he enjoys their company and regrets leaving. He gives instructions about Robert's departure. Some names have been cut out of this letter.
