At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chamberlain, Lieutenant Colonel of the 20th Maine Volunteers, writes to Brown (possibly John Marshall Brown), Adjutant of the 20th Regiment. Requests a fifteen day leave of absence to attend to business in Maine, "involving pecuniary and other important interests." Adds that all field officers of the 20th Regiment are present.
