At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Four autograph copies of notes that were sent to Beauregard as telegrams. Telegrams relate to various preparations for military action and the defense of Confederate positions in Mississippi. All telegrams were sent to Beauregard in Tupelo, Mississippi. Discusses protecting plantation boats, the enemy at Holly Springs, the position of repairing machinery, and the need for railroad cars to transport men and supplies.
