At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Cranor is separated from his regiment which is serving in Alabama. He is in a convalescent camp in Nashville, Tennessee where he has recently been recovering, but is still plagued with cramps. He makes one of his many references to the state of agriculture and the weather in the South.
