At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Commander Military Division of the Mississippi Sherman writes to General Butterfield to discuss preparations for the campaign against Atlanta and problems with rail transportation. He also comments on the high quality of General Thomas Hooker's divisions and his expectations for them. Several other union generals are mentioned. Written on printed stationary marked "Head-Quarters Military Division of the Mississippi."
