At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

She is glad to learn that he has escaped unharmed and feels for the many brave soldiers who gave their lives in battle. Writes that she is visiting their sister Lydia. She thinks that the visit will do her good both "bodily and mentally." Likes the weather and country there very much. Compared to all of the sad scenes they are used to she is "comparatively speaking, happy." Writes that everyone at Lydia's is doing well. Thinks that their home is very "delightful" as there is often music and flowers. Writes that Henry delivers papers which pays 15 dollars a week. She does not have a job. William does not live far from Lydia. Wishes that he was there with them. Describes the room she is staying in at Lydia's house. Writes a few lines about their childhood. They have visited William and had a nice feast. She feels bad discussing these things knowing the hardships he is suffering. Thinks the picture of her brother with his gun and ready to march is interesting. She is glad that he has friends who are sympathetic to his status as a soldier. Writes him some updates on family members. Notes that Amanda stayed with her for a few weeks.
