At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Is busy drawing rations for the men. "We drew 70 lbs of good whitefish for our co but we have no potatoes to cook them with." The men are bored in camp and lazy; Damuth says they do not get enough exercise, but have plenty to eat and drink. Of his own position in camp, Damuth writes, "I dont have any hard work to do it is my busness to see that some one els does it." The mail is sent to New Orleans and then up to the men in Arkansas, so that Damuth is impatient with the long wait.
