At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to wife complaining of unfair treatment, "we are dumb beasts here and treated worse some times I think for we have got to go when they say go no matter how hard it storms or how dark the night is thare no backing out for poor private in the ranks but oficers can send their orderlies and they will come when the storm is over and it is all right but that aristocracy is playing out in the army of the potomac ..."
