At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that he is now at his company headquarters in Alexandria, and speculates that they will be there all winter. Writes "when I serve these six months more out they will never see me in the Army again." Notes that there is talk of them being discharged by the first of April. Inquires about their mother's rheumatism. Written in pencil.
