At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his father about Baltimore being under Marshal Law. Tells him that no soldiers are allowed out without a pass from the Provost Marshal because there was a fight at The Melodian, possibly a bar, where two soldiers were shot. Written on stationery with "US Army General Hospital, Newton University, Baltimore" letterhead.
