At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in secretarial hand and signed by Rear Admiral Lanman to Captain Nicholson of the USS "Lancaster." Orders Nicholson to release John Carroll who was confined for smuggling liquor. He also directs that Carroll be taken from the crew of the barge. Stamp in blue ink says: "U.S. Flag Ship / Lancaster / Feb 27 1872." Written while aboard the USS "Lancaster"
