At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Howe, a lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry, discusses efforts to recruit men, possibly for Captain John H. Buell (see GLC03432.050) who he mentions has not yet arrived in Middletown, Connecticut. Possibly written to Major Lemuel Trescott of the 2nd U.S. Infantry.
