At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes Bryant that he has spoken with the Secretary of War (Timothy Pickering) regarding howitzers and that they believe it is "necessary." Instructs Bryant to complete the carriages and to suspend all other operations until he receives further orders. Discusses Bryant's accounts, tells him he needs to account for everything if he wants credit and to balance his accounts.
