Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Sheridan forwards a book (not included) of Indian illustrations supposedly found in Black Kettle's tent after Custer's 1868 victory over him "on the Washita in the Indian Country." The book illustrated the "heroic deeds of Black Kettle & his band, or at least some of his Warriors."
